Obituary of Harry Garner

Garner, Harry (Jack) Ernest Long ~ February 25, 1920 – January 31, 2015 ~ Born in Waterloo to Harry and Kathleen, Jack moved to St Jacobs in 1921. A dedicated husband, he was heartbroken by the death of his wife Mildred Weaver in 1997. Survived by son David (Michelle Karn), chosen daughter Mary Lynn Kastner, and daughter-in-law Carol Garner. Papa to Sarah (Jon) Ingram of Barrie, Trevor (Julie) Garner of Waterloo, and Great-Papa to Alysha, Gwen, Brooke, Hugh, and Harry. Predeceased by his sister Aline in 2005. Jack served four years overseas with the Canadian Armed Forces during WWII and met lifelong chum John Hoch in line to enlist. Employed at B.F. Goodrich for 41 years. Jack was an active member of Calvary United Church his whole life where he lent his voice to the church choir, was the Sunday school superintendent and was keenly involved in many of the church decisions. An avid sports enthusiast, he loved to attend the Rangers games, and watch the Blue Jays and the Maple Leafs on TV. Instrumental in the creation and construction of the Sprucelawn Apartments for Seniors, Jack and Mildred were the first tenants, and Jack was the longest residing tenant – until age 93 when he moved to St. Jacobs Place. Jack’s family is ever grateful for the friends and neighbours at Sprucelawn, the staff at St. Jacobs Place and Heritage House.
