Obituary of Orvie Shantz

Shantz, Orvie M. ~ Peacefully passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at his residence in Elmira at the age of 76 years. Beloved husband and best friend of Edith “Edie” (Fitz) Shantz for 53 years. Dear father of Debbie and Jeff Martin, Juliane Shantz and James Schlegel, all of Elmira. Proud papa of Olivia and Maria Martin and Nicholas and Jackson Shantz-Schlegel. Brother of Urias and Martha Shantz, Nancy and Walter Martin, Annie Gingrich, and brother-in-law of Almeda Shantz and Anne Shantz. Predeceased by his parents Levi and Melinda (Martin) Shantz, brothers Melvin (Alice), Noah, Aden, and brother-in-law Abner Gingrich. Orv had a deep love for and an innate understanding of the natural world. He was happiest when he was running his dogs in the bush or hunting coyotes, deer, bear, caribou, moose, and fishing. He experienced the beauty of the world God created and felt God most closely when he was in the outdoors. He loved his dogs and cared for them tenderly. He had a great interest in and respect for animals of all kinds. Orv was a lifelong Christian and had an abiding faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour. He was a long time and committed member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Elmira. He was a special and fun-loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. The family will receive their relatives and friends at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira on Monday, December 8, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Elmira on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. followed by interment in Elmira Union Cemetery. In Orvie’s memory, donations to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
