Obituary of George Uhrig
Uhrig, George William ~ Passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Monday, December 2, 2013 at St. Mary’s General Hospital, at the age of 81 years. Loving husband for 60 years to Jean (nee Stahle) of Conestogo. Proud father of Glenn (Val), Susan Bechard (Jeff), Joan Hahn (Roger), Wayne, Keith (Marta), Steve (Leslie), and Chris Shoemaker (Larry). Remembered by his special niece Dawn Haussler (Reiner). Caring grandfather to Jason, Jennifer, Becky (Callum), Luke (Lisa), Mark (Ashley), Christopher (Pamela), Melissa (Lucas), Jeremy, Ashley (Toze), Ila, Brett (Jessilyn), Brandon, Tanis, Josh, and made great by Maddy, Nolan, Ava, Travis, Grayson, and Isaac. Also survived by brothers Doug and Jim, and sisters Shirley Gies and Mary Jane Goetz. Brother-in-law to the Stahle family, Wayne, Bruce, Jim, and Carol Allendorf. Predeceased by his parents George and Frieda, brother Richard, and parents-in-law Wilfred and Ada Stahle. When he left school George worked for Electrohome on Wellington St., started a small business repairing radios and TVs, sold appliances and installed TV aerials. He also worked for Fischer’s Bread delivering house to house with a horse and wagon. He was hired by Wm. Knell Retail Store on King St., then relocated to their Victoria St. store. George was an original founder of G & A Lock Service Ltd. and the inspiration behind The Uhrig Lock Museum, Canada’s only lock museum. George operated his business as he did his life – with humour. He’s been a lifetime supporter of KidsAbility (originally Rotary Children’s Centre) as they supported him as a child. George will be remembered as a warm, generous, fun-loving man. The family will receive relatives and friends for a time of remembrance and celebration of his life at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 469 (11 First St. E., Elmira) on Friday, December 6, 2013 from 2:30 p.m. until “After 7”. In lieu of flowers, donations to KidsAbility would kindly be accepted in George’s honour. Special thanks for the loving care he received on the 5th floor and in ICU 2nd floor at St. Mary’s General Hospital. Also, we will never forget your “popsicle” honour guard. We will miss our family tinker-boy, handyman and picture framer dude. Goodbye to the biggest kid we will ever know, and may your feet always be coloured. “Have a short one Dad!”
