My condolences to the family of the best teacher I ever had. He made my last year at FHCI a very special year as my Calculus teacher and computer science mentor. I have been trying to locate him for years after I left the area, and am heartbroken to find him this way. At a time (1979) when computer sciences wasn’t considered a “woman’s field”, he encouraged my interest in it which provided a lifetime benefit. He was a kind, patient teacher, always encouraging us to branch out. That was the year, through our class’ Casino Night, we were able to purchase 2 PC’s into our classroom (TRS 80s), and didn’t have to rely 100% on Cameron Height’s punch card computer. Thank you Mr. Brown for your gift of knowledge. I am sadly disappointed we never met again. Terri (Brattain) Cutts.

I was so saddened to hear of Doug's Passing.
Dearest "Jo"--you know what a wonderful leader and mentor he has been to so many--especially new teachers. I will never forget his patience, support, and kindness to me when I joined the Board in the early 90's. The Professional Development opportunities he shared with so many educators to empower them to use technology in their practice is unmatched.
Doug always had time to listen and offer advice. I will fondly remember canoeing with him at CATC by the water, and the genuine care he offered to everyone who interacted with him.
My heart is breaking for you and your family. I wish you peace at this very difficult time.
Deepest condolences,
--Jenn Clark (Frey)

To Joanne and Doug's extended family my sincere condolences. I had the good fortune to work with Doug for 10 years while at the Board office as a Program Coordinator. Doug's collaborative style took a lot of pressure off of me as I was the first to admit and Doug would laughingly agree that I was lacking in the knowledge and capabilities of the computer technology that was becoming so important in the classroom. We enjoyed numerous social events as well which added to the great working relationship we had. Unfortunately I was unable to attend Doug's celebration of life but will be making a donation in his name. Great guy ... will be missed by many.

My sincere condolences to Jo-Anne and Doug's family. I met Doug in 1980 at FHCI, when I was a first-year teacher. I was in the Business Department; Doug in the Math Department. As a first-year teacher, I didn't understand some of the awkward politics between the two departments when it came to computers; regardless, Doug was helpful and kind to me especially when he saw that I worked (almost) as hard as he. Doug, may you Rest In Peace and may Light perpetual shine upon you.

Dear Jo-Anne and all of Doug’s family, I am saddened to hear this and will not be able to return to Ontario for the service. Doug was a true educator and I was privileged to learn from him, work alongside him, and from time to time disagree with him and have a lively debate. Lots of wonderful memories will be shared, I’m sure!

I first met Doug 47 years ago at Forest Heights as a Grade 9 student. He taught me in a Computer Concepts course that spurred my interest in the technology.
I then worked with Doug at FHCI and spent many trips helping him with the Camping Club; hikes, camping, winter camps and canoe trips.
I followed him to the Ed Centre and worked with him for 27 years. From the Commodore Pet through to a Region Wide fibre optic network (WREPNet) we experienced the seismic shift of the role of computers and technology in the classroom.
Doug was a leader and mentor to me.
Thanks Doug.

Almost 50 years ago, Doug and I taught math directly across from each other at Forest Heights. He was an exceptional teacher and I learned so much being in his company. I also had the privilege of working with Doug again when he was a coordinator and manager at the school board. His work and skills significantly and positively impacted what and how students learn in our region. Doug was a talented and innovative educator, and I am privileged to have had Doug as a mentor and as a friend. Our heartfelt condolences to Jo-Anne and his family.

Doug never liked driving a dirty car and offered me the opportunity to clean and detail it often. Happy to do it. Sincere Condolences to the whole Family.

Like Ken, I grew up on South Street and counted Doug as a wonderful friend. We shared great times playing tennis, cards, sending coded notes to each other at Mahood School, tobogganing on and on. God bless you friend.

At Doug's retirement celebration, I was honoured to tell him that as a direct result of his class at FHCI, I discovered my vocation and indeed continue to have a successful career to this day. At that gathering, I was not the only former student to deliver such a message. I've never forgotten the start that Doug provided at the start of my career journey, and I will remain forever grateful. I also have fond memories of the FHCI Camping Club that Doug led. A picture of the Club in the FHCI Yearbook continues to be a cherished memory. Besides, it's one of the very few remaining pictures showing me with substantial hair.

I remember being a little in awe of Doug when I was growing up since he was one of my older cousins. I had the good fortune to get to know him a little better when my family lived across from him and his family in Elmira on South St. for a few years. I was glad to have him as a cousin. He will be missed.
