Grandma’s Journey
At the end of July Elvina had an appointment with her doctor because she was having some discomfort, and was having trouble eating. There was an ultrasound done, and it showed clear.
On August 11th, she went to Fergus ER because her symptoms were getting worse. There they found a large mass in her abdomen, and some spots on the liver and lung. The doctor on call advised her to get her “emotional and spiritual needs met”.
Over the next weeks, Grandpa tried to keep her eating as much as possible, but it went harder and harder. Some years ago, Grandma had planted several peach pits in their backyard, and two of them grew into big trees. This summer they produced several bushels of fruit, more than ever before. This was one of the foods that she was able to eat the longest.
On August 27th, Grandma had a colonoscopy done, which then confirmed the cancer diagnosis.
By September 2nd, we as a family felt she should have some professional attention again, and took her to Grand River ER. At this time she started taking some morphone tablets for the pain. The doctors seemed somewhat baffled as to where her pain was coming from.
On September 8th, Grandma had a phone appointment with a student doctor at Grand River, to discuss the tests that had been done, and what to pursue further.
On September 17th, she had a phone visit with the oncologist at Grand River, who advised another visit to Fergus ER, possibly to do surgery to relieve some of the pain. By this point she was almost too weak to travel to Fergus, but we took her in. They evaluated her there, and said she’s too weak for surgery.
After the visit to Fergus, we had nurses coming in daily to help with her care. The pain medication was steadily increased over the next week, and she gradually became somewhat confused and drowsy from all the medication. She was still communicating a little bit up till Sunday noon.
Through it all we are very thankful that Grandma was able to be at home, and we as a family were able to be there with her.
We also gained a deep appreciation for the nurses at Care Partners and the staff at Bayshore Medical which provided excellent 24/7 support.
