Rita Huschka

Obituary of Rita Anne Huschka

Rita Ann Huschka

October 16, 1957 - July 9, 2021

Rita was born to Bob and Mary Huschka in Kitchener, and grew up in Elmira with her brothers Tom (Brenda) and Robbie. She attended Elmira District Secondary School then graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with an English degree in 1981.

From there, Rita’s life took her all over the globe: she lived in Scotland for almost nine years, built her dream home in the Turks and Caicos islands, and travelled the world while raising her children Josh (Erin) and Sabrina (David). Eventually, she settled in Ontario where most of her grandchildren live, but would travel frequently to be on her favourite beach in Provo, Turks and Caicos.

Rita effortlessly connected people from different walks of life in meaningful ways. She brought friends together from all over the world who became her extended family, and spearheaded theatre exchange programs between Scotland, Canada, and Turks and Caicos.

Throughout her life, theatre was Rita’s passion. She was an avid member of the Elmira Theatre Company, Scottish Community Drama Association, Western Ontario Drama League, Theatre Ontario, Turks and Caicos Friends of the Arts, as well as other international associations. As an actress, director, play-polisher, adjudicator, and teacher, she participated in numerous festivals winning awards for her immense talent, including WODL director and actress of the year, which she was very proud of.

An incredible host, whose door was always open, Rita was happiest surrounded by family, friends, fine food, and “red, red wine”. Known for her enchiladas, pickles, pies, and even her Caribbean souse, everyone loved Rita’s cooking! She read anything she could get her hands on, and would never shy away from a fiery political debate.

Rita was a bold, brilliant woman. Her dynamic, lively, and supportive personality impacted everyone who was lucky enough to know her. Over the past few years her health deteriorated, but being Rita, she continued to live life to the absolute fullest. Cherished grandchildren: Owen, Kade, Kenley, Finley, and Sidney, will miss their Oma or “Ahpoo” greatly, as will everyone whose life has been touched by her loving, vivacious, and cheeky spirit.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Rita’s life will be held in August, 2021. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
