I had the privilege of working with Orvie at MEDA. Orvie had a special presence that left you feeling brighter and more positive after having spoken to him. He had a wonderful way of putting everyone at ease, sprinkling jokes throughout our discussions, and always approaching interactions with kindness, curiousity and a great deal of humility. He was deeply dedicated to making an impact and leading with integrity. I will cherish these qualities that Orvie embodied on a daily basis and seek to reflect them in my own actions. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Orvie’s family, friends and colleagues. May you find space for reflection, connection and peace.

Hearing about Orvie really knocked the wind out of me. I can't imagine your sense of loss. What an incredible guy, who will be deeply missed. I am praying for you, praying, praying. I don't understand these things. But my faith is not as strong as Orvie's. He got promoted to glory early, and now leaves a large hole where he made such an impact and leaves a lasting legacy from his time here. The road ahead will not be easy, but he left a beautiful example and inspiration to carry on, trusting God faithfully along the unknown journey, until Jesus returns to wipe away all our tears. Until that day, I know that Jesus weeps with you, and I pray that His Spirit will surround you with comfort and strength beyond understanding. The celebration service was beautiful, and you all did an amazing job to share special memories and a musical tribute together. Wow. I'm sure Orvie is extremely proud and honoured. I feel privileged to have known him and inspired to see the remarkable impact of his life. Thank-you Orvie.

Dear Heather - My thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole family during this incredibly tough time. I am so grateful for the time I got to work with Orvie on the finance team at MEDA. He was an incredible leader and had a wonderful gift of bringing our team closer together even during COVID. Orvie prioritized relationships with everyone he worked with. When we went to work from home last year, he organized weekly games for our finance team to make sure we stayed connected while apart. He would also lead all of our meetings with a fun ice breaker like “What’s your favourite flower” or “Where’s your favourite place to go hiking”. He had a way of making us all feel included and like a valued member of the team. He was the kind of leader that you could always count on to have your back. We will really miss him at MEDA but will be a better group because of his leadership.

I can't appreciate the grief that you all find yourselves facing in the past days and those to come. I don't consider myself a very religious person however I can't help but feeling that the cold, darkness and rain of the past few days has represented the grief we have felt personally and for all of you and that the sun of today is Orvie's light reminding us he is still here to comfort us as one last selfless act.

I would like to offer my sincere and deep condolences to you Heather, Jaron, Danya and Karis. I had the great privilege to have worked with Orvie at Manulife and more closely at Sun Life. It was such an honour to get to know him. I will remember his kindness, authenticity and caring approach to leadership. He demonstrated a passion for our business and the impact we make on the quality of people's lives through the support we provide through disability management. Underpinning that passion was his keen desire to ensure that we meaningfully supported, developed and cared for our staff, his people, his team. Orvie has left a deep impression on many colleagues who over the past couple weeks have shared their experience working with him.
I wish you peace and comfort in your memories of your husband and father and in the example he set for so many of us. We will miss Orvie.

Orvie examplified integrity, kindness, strength of character, and generosity of spirit. I’m shocked and saddened to learn about his tragedic passing. Orvie was true to his word and his beliefs. He would generously spent his time and energy helping others while seeking nothing in return. When I last spoke with him, his thoughts were of his family and the joy and adventures they have ahead of them. Business has lost a compassionate and intelligent leader. His friends and family have lost so much more. My heartfelt and deepest condolences to his family and close friends.

We knew from our very first meeting with Orvie that he was the right person for the CFIO role at MEDA. That initial instinct was only deepened and affirmed over the past 14 months as Orvie came on board and began to embrace our vision and our work. He combined a solid technical skill set with extensive experience, a passion for our mission of creating business solutions to poverty and a depth of character and personality that fit our culture perfectly.
Foremost Orvie was kind, intelligent, very hard working, high integrity, humble and had a great sense of humour. He brought a considerable skill set and experience that extended well beyond investment and finance. I don’t think it is possible to overstate the debt that MEDA owes him for his work in bringing a framework to operationalize our strategic plan. He worked tirelessly to lead the Executive Leadership Team on a journey to develop a shared understanding of our key priorities and translate that to key initiatives and workstreams. This rigor and discipline will be critical to our future success and will be a lasting legacy that will guide us in the years to come. We will be better for his leadership - I will be better for having known him, for having been able to work with him.
The full extent of Orvie’s activity and involvement became apparent as the ELT met to review his projects and responsibilities – wow, he leaves big shoes to fill.
Transcending all this is Orvie’s faith, an integral part of who he was – he had a hope – both for this world and this life, and for the next. That hope is grounded in Jesus Christ and his example, his sacrifice. I’m confident that Orvie has moved on to be with his Lord and Savior. I draw comfort from his faith and I pray that you will be comforted in your loss. May we all experience God's grace and peace.

My sincere condolences to the Bowman Family. I worked with Orvie as a part of Sun Life's Disability organization. I will always remember him as a truly kind person. In the years when I reported to him, I was fortunate enough to experience a safe space, mentorship and true collaboration. Orvie was a supportive leader, as invested in an employee's career as they were, always willing to provide advice and guidance on any issue. I have fond memories of traveling with him to Montreal and walking to the evening functions as it "was beautiful outside for a walk to Old Montreal" or watching the Blue Jays game together with our leader group in Toronto. Later, as he moved on to the Finance team, I appreciated his willingness to catch up over lunch on the waterfront when we both were at One York for the day. Orvie never failed to greet you with a genuine smile and happiness and loved to speak of his family adventures. You could recognize the pure joy that he received from his home life during those moments. We will miss him dearly.

I worked closely with Orvie when we were both in Group Retirement Services at Sun Life. Orvie was smart, hard working, funny, great listener, and one of the kindest person I have ever known. He was always calm and had the time to anyone regardless of how busy he was and the pressure that he was in. Orvie treated everyone equally. By treat, also literally; I wasn't part of his team and he offered me the delicious peanut butter balls he brought to work when he joined the company (and again when he left). Here are some memory of Orvie from one of the event in 2015; I think the one picture of Orvie from the side really captures him. So long Orvie. God loves you more than we do.
