To Duncan:
The name says it all, The dark horse he was and such a good person in his abilities to travel many roads, hills, valleys, and curves living and loving life, shared by all the memories, bring a chuckle and his final day, tears to many a soul, now resting peacefully and without any fears hiding around those corners of despair, and the solitude, now with silence in his world. Duncan, I think of you often and yes, you were proud with the success earned, how others benefit to this day and continue to reap the rewards shared and viewed and may this dark house ride the waves with all the peaks and valleys and forever remain in our hearts and soul, thoughts and prayers, and continue riding that horse with a warm wind behind your back. God bless you Duncan and you lived life in all that this world had to offer and that smile says it all.
My Love, Thoughts and Prayers I Share with you: Forever and ever. Amen
Brian

Nicholas, Andrew and Tyler, please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of your father, Duncan. We remember your dad warmly for his seemingly miraculous ability to repair virtually anything, and to be in possession of the proper tool to do so. With fondness, our childhood memories include him sailing makeshift boats in the rain filled gutters of Queen Street, and your dad in full scuba attire, immersed in his repair, while in the depths of our four-foot above ground pool. We often marveled at your dad’s limitless energy, his tour-de-force positivity, and the astounding back flips he maneuvered on your trampoline. Please know that his thoughtfulness, kind heartedness, and good nature will sorely be missed by our family.

This cat Caesar was Duncan's constant companion at his house and after he moved to Kitchener. Caesar spent time on Duncan's bed both day and night. He often took a good share of space as he is close to 20 lbs but seemed to know that he was needed. Duncan loved him and wanted to make sure he was cared for after he passed. That promise was easy as he is so mellow and affectionate.
Duncan, Caesar is fine and you are now fine to feel good. Love you always. Daphne

My Uncle, my friend, I can't believe you're gone because it feels too soon. Your struggles are over and may you now be peaceful and free. You had a taste for fine food and I'm sure one of Picard's best customers! Your sense of humour, passion for travel and adventure, sport/competition, great craftsmanship, willingness to help others, love of music, cats, family and friends will never be forgotten. Introducing you to selfie pictures with filters at Christmas 2 years ago made you laugh so incredibly hard...my daughter has a video of us laughing and I have the pictures to treasure. You were ready to go I know even though we weren't. Every time I hear Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd you are always in my thoughts. Endless thanks to my Mom, Sandra, my Aunt Daphne, Cousin Nicholas and the rest of our family for all that you did for him and sending him off with his heart full of love. One definition of "Family" is a group of people acting as a unit and may we continue to love and support one another now and forever. Miss you Duncan, wish you were here...Love, Stephanie

Nick, Andrew and Tyler - Queen Street was a wonderful neighbourhood in large part because of your father’s generous spirit and involvement in our lives. I remember fondly the boating trip when your family stopped overnight at the Bradshaw cottage on Georgian Bay. My boys were thrilled to show Tyler their cottage and swimming spots. We remember Duncan fondly.

To my little brother,
I guess your name says it all - Duncan a boys name & Scottish which means "dark warrior" and that is fitting for you. You have dark hair, you are fit and i believe in many ways you have been our family " warrior". In saying that I know you are not offended as it describes how you lived your life. Being the youngest of the 4 Smith's you had the will and the spirit to keep up with the rest of us. Our Mother said your first words were "wait for me". And you did keep up.
Running with us and learning to ride a large boys bike with your back under the cross bar had warrior status for sure. You learned many things by following and keeping up. That would not be easy but you survived.
Your battles included struggles at school and your teachers were not encouraging. Once again -you did it.
I do remember you and Brian being able to watch the Three Stooges on a Saturday morning when Daphne and I had many chores to complete before any TV.
Our family trip to Thunder Bay in the Austin stationwagon included your outbreak of measles- making you very sick and yet we still went- you with big sunglasses and drinking lots of water. We did it.
The hard working family mandate saw you and Brian doing whatever it took to earn a few dollars for the things that were dreamt to be yours. You did it.
You found your life mate and worked for the City of Kitchener achieving success in hands on heavy work with a team of co-workers that respect and probably have many stories that make you smile. You are an important part of that team.
As a Dad and community worker you put your all into both things. Raising wonderful, caring, energetic young men - your sons-You did it!
The community of Elmira and the world is a better place because you did your part. Heart & Stroke, Optomists-Scouts- Maple Syrup festival-Poppy fund-Rod and Gun clubs and donating to many causes where you were anonymous. You did it.
As a brother you cared about our wellbeing and dug in when we moved homes- needed advice or listened to family chatter. You did it.
You travelled the world and know it's many wonders. Your mind still yearns to know about wildlife-how things are made- & your love of music makes your heart sing.
Your choice to leave us is yours- the suffering of disease makes your time now most difficult. You must remember your beautiful bucket list of life and how happy your little granddaughters are to be part of our family.
As your leave you must know we will return you to the darkness and the warmth of the earth- into the sadness and smiles of our memories- to the cycle of living and dying and rising again- to rest in peace, in fulfilment , in love- into the freedom ot the wind and sunshine- into the dance of the stars and planets-into the wind's breath and hands of the Starmaker -we will let you go- We love you, we thank you , miss you - go safely, go dancing, go singing home ( r. burgess) -Love always Sandra
