Obituary of Curtis Brubacher

Curtis Brubacher died peacefully in the presence of his wife Alice (Snider), on November 24, 2010, in his 94th year. Curtis was born in 1917 to Almeta (Good) and Menno Brubacher, on the home farm, one mile east of Heidelberg, where he lived until his retirement in 1982. He was the youngest of six siblings. He is predeceased by his brothers Abner (Arminta) and Walter (Beatrice), and sisters Elizabeth Martin (Enoch) and Lucinda Cressman (Abner). He is survived by his sister, Ada, age 103. Left to treasure many lifetime memories are children Sanford (and Colette) from Burlington, Maurice (and Hannelore, and Hana and Lily) from Durham, Lorrie (and Dan Perlman) from Greensboro, NC, and Ross from Elmira; grandchildren Sarah (and Rob White) from Fergus, Tim Brubacher (and Alisa) from Hamilton, Shannon Friesen and Josh Friesen from Winnipeg; and great granddaughter Isabella White. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and two generations of grand nieces and nephews, and siblings-in-law Olive Good, Naomi and Clayton Sauder and Alice M. Brubacher. Curtis lived through the many challenges of the Great Depression, raising his children and building his prized dairy herd. He took pleasure in working hard and doing his best in all his responsibilities. He was keenly interested in his reading, singing, and church leadership activities. He loved his family and had a particularly unwavering support for his disabled son Ross. He dearly loved and appreciated his wife Alice throughout the 65 years of their marriage. Their shared faith in Jesus Christ was a firm foundation that extended far beyond their family. After retiring from farming in 1982, Curtis spent 12 years as Director of the Mennonite Meeting Place in St. Jacobs. Through this work, he and Alice made many local and international friends. Curtis was a devoted supporter of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, the Mennonite Central Committee, Rockway Mennonite School, and the Elmira and District Association for Community Living. The family extends appreciation for the compassionate and excellent care given to Curtis during the past six months at Victoria Place Retirement Residence in Kitchener, Grand River Hospital and Heritage House in St. Jacobs. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be on Sunday, November 28, 2010 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira. The interment service will be held at St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery on Monday, November 29, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. The memorial service will be held at St. Jacobs Mennonite Church on Monday November 29, 2010 at 11 a.m. It was Curtis' wish that memorial gifts be designated to: Mennonite Central Committee, 50 Kent St., Kitchener, ON, N2G 3R1 or the Elmira and District Association for Community Living, 25 Industrial Dr., Elmira, ON, N3B 2Y9.
