Obituary of George Edward Ritter

1923-2018

Peacefully passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Lanark Heights LTC, Kitchener, at the age of 95 years. Beloved husband of the late Ruth (Schweitzer) Ritter (2015). Dear father of Dr. Michael (Mike) and Jenny Ritter of New Hamburg, Susan and Bill Cronin of St. Jacobs, and Laurie and Rev. Graham Burkhart of New Dundee. Loving grandfather of Chad Ritter, Renée Ritter (Addae Headley); Bill (Tawnessa), Bob (Sarah), Ben (Daryl), Bryan (Jen), Brad (Krysta) Cronin; Jeremy (Crystal) Burkhart, Rachel (Mike) Braniff, Bethany, Joel (Esther) and Jesse Burkhart. Special great-grandpa of 20 great-grandchildren. Brother of Fred Ritter, Fran Reger, Jean Adamson, Grace (Elgin) McCandless, and sisters-in-law Doreen Ritter and Mildred Heller. Also survived by many nieces and nephews of the Ritter and Schweitzer families. Predeceased by his parents Peter and Mabel (Fleet) Ritter, brothers Harold (Merle) and Carl Ritter, sisters-in-law Florence Ritter, brothers-in-law Lorne Reger, Lorne Heller, Wes (Norma) Snyder, Verne (Vera) Cress, and George Adamson. George was a veteran of the Second World War, and was involved in a peacekeeping role at the end of the war. He was a very active community member, having been a volunteer fireman in St. Jacobs for 33 years, and an active Lions member for 50 years. He was a “Mr. Fixit” in the area, and was employed by S.E. Derbecker Heating and Plumbing. The family will receive their relatives and friends on Sunday, November 4, 2018, from 2-6 p.m. at the Emmanuel Evangelical Missionary Church, 2 First St. W., Elmira. A family interment will take place. A Memorial Celebration of George’s life and faith will take place on Monday, November 5, 2018 at 11 a.m., at Emmanuel Church. The family wishes to thank everyone for their loving and compassionate care at St. Jacobs Place, St. Mary’s Hospital, Freeport Hospital and most recently at Lanark Heights LTC. He truly enjoyed the relationships he developed. In George’s memory, donations to Habitat for Humanity, or World Vision would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
